Poor Blind Isaac

Posted on March 1, 2011. Filed under: Genesis: Answers to Life's Crucial Questions |

Now Isaac was old and his eyes were dim, his faith was traded for venison.

Himself a child of the covenant once  promised, yet Rebekah’s oracle he now compromised.

He loved his son Esau, the red, hairy hunter; yet Esau, God  passed over, and had chosen the younger.

Resisting God’s will, though partly revealed, leads to wrong choices and many raised voices.

Rebekah was listening, and plotting and planning; Jacob and mother, ahead of God’s leading.

A lie they concocted, a play they enacted; to steal Esau’s blessing, and preserve God’s choosing.

The food was all cooked, the meal had been eaten; Jacob was blessed, old Isaac deceived.

Esau returned, his meal – rejected! Isaac was trembling, his blessing rejected.

“Jacob I loved, Esau I hated!” Inscrutable, God’s choosing; Election, God’s choice.

Man’s sinful choices, real choices; yet God’s sovereign will, not fate, wise and love filled.

“Come unto me all ye who are weary, repent and believe,” He calls and commands.

We’re dead and can’t follow, blind in our hearts; Needing God’s grace, needing new birth.

We’ve eaten the apple, poisoned us all; deceived by the serpent, the flesh and the world.

Promised the world yet feeling rejected? We’re Esaus all, blind Isaacs as well.

Frank sings, do it your way; yet our way is lost, self help’s no help. None  seek Him, not even the best.

“Your Best Life Now” – but a treadmill of vain works; doing God’s work my way, leads only to hell.

Resisting God’s will, loving second best; creating little idols, the world calls  best.

What God has said NO to, I still cling to. All these wrong choices, … blame someone else?

Are my eyes seeing God’s will? Do I know Him at all? Sin-dimmed soul, have I been bought and sold?

Am I under His covenant? or cast off completely? Is faith compromised? Can I find hope?
