A Personal Note: Pvt. Luke Walker Graduates from Basic

Saturday, June 7, 2008- I have not been online in the last 4 weeks due to my company giving me another job that is very demanding of my time and energy, and we took a short vacation, and we had some electrical/internet problems at the house that finally got fixed yesterday! Our studies in Genesis in Sunday School are continuing but we are now in some material that I had written many years ago, prior to acquiring a computer. Therefore, some of these lessons will just not be published here as I have not the time to retype the sermons. I obviously have not had the time to give out anymore recipes either, and do not know if I can return to that anytime soon. Nor have I had the energy for anymore Worship War tales from my days as a pastor. I will not close down this blog because some folk still find it worthwhile perhaps, but my posts will be fewer and farther apart.

The big event lately was our little 5 day trip to Fort Benning, GA. to see our son, Luke, graduate from Basic Training and AIT (OSUT) and join the ranks of the Infantry in the finest Army in the world. Jeremy, Dawn and I traveled on Wed. the 21st and made the trip all in one day. I thoroughly irritated my wife by listening to Mark Davis of WBAP and then Rush Limbaugh and then Sean Hannity as I drove! We got to Columbus around 2100 hrs EST after leaving home in Ft Worth at 0630. On Thursday we went to the Turning Blue ceremony of C Co. 1/50th Inf. The company of 11C (mortars) soldiers was dressed in their class A’s to receive their blue Infantry cords. As a former Infantry Officer (Mortar Platoon Leader in the 3/47th Inf back in the 1980’s) I had the privilege of pinning on Luke’s blue cord. Blue is the Infantry’s color and the cord is a distinguishing sign that lets the rest of the Army know who we are. The rest of the Army supports the Infantry, the Queen of Battle. The soldiers received a pass for the rest of the day so we all went out to eat with Dawn’s parents who live there in Columbus (which is where I met Dawn, back when I was in Infantry Officer Basic in 1981.)

Friday the 23rd was graduation so we were all there: Dawn, Jeremy and me along with Dad and Nana, Uncle Tom and Deanna, Anna and Josh. A team of soldiers with a couple of Striker vehicles gave us a firepower demo before the ceremonies started, which was way cool. I spoke with some of the troops and they all love the Striker; it has saved our soldier’s lives in the war while dealing out death to the enemy. The Fort Benning Band began the ceremonies with some traditional Sousa marches and then the 1/50th marched in. A retired Army Command Sergeant Major gave the speech and he did well. Then the Battalion marched in review. A good time was had by all.

On Saturday we all got to attend a Pittman family reunion (Dawn’s mom’s side of the family) in LaGrange. This was neat because it was the first time in our 26 years of marriage that we have been able to attend. Of course Pvt. Walker was the focus of a lot of attention.

Sadly, we had to drive home on Sunday. We don’t much care for skipping church and driving but Jeremy had to be at work the next day and Dawn and I needed to rest on Memorial Day. We listened to RC Sproul CDs on Ecclesiastes to help us feel like we were back home listening to Pastor Tim preaching (he is currently preaching through Ecclesiastes at Redeemer Church) and afterwards we plugged in some worship music and did church in the car.

Luke has been in a holding company for the last couple of weeks but begins Airborne School on Monday the 9th. That will be 3 weeks of intense physical training learning how to jump out of airplanes!
